The integration of life-long learning into the work place will become a
familiar feature of life in the next decade. It is more than likely that
distance education delivery will be the prime strategy many universities will
employ in partnership with industry. This paper outlines some of the network
solutions currently being employed by the University of Plymouth to extend its
operations to deliver distance learning opportunities to businesses and part
time learners in the South West of England. The paper discusses the current
climate of change in universities and industry partnerships, defines telematic
technologies, outlines the current network infrastructure at the University of
Plymouth, and examines some of the human factors and pedagogical theories
associated with flexible working and learning at a distance from the parent
institute.
