Career

For the first 5 years of my career I worked in the Educational Technology department at the College of St Mark and St John, (a teacher training college in Plymouth), before joining the National Health Service in 1981. From 1981 to 1995 I set up and managed the audio visual and information technology services within both the Plymouth and Cornwall Schools of Nursing, and then managed the Learning Resources provision for the Tor and South West College of Health Studies across Cornwall, Devon and Somerset (now incorporated into the University of Plymouth's Faculty of Health and Social Work).

In 1996 I joined the European funded RATIO project (Rural Area Training and Information Opportunities) as Training Manager. My project team set up a network of 39 centres across the South West peninsula of England which were used by local businesses to access telematic training courses and information products.

In 1998 I joined the Faculty of Education at the University of Plymouth, where I am now based in the Continuing Professional Development School. I teach on a range of under graduate and post graduate courses including the BA Education Studies programme, B.Ed Primary ICT Specialist Pathway and the Integrated Masters Programme (IMP).  I am a visiting lecturer at several overseas Universities, and work with a variety of national and international agencies and organisations researching and evaluating distance education, e-learning applications and ICT in teaching and learning.

In 2006 I was given responsibility to co-ordinate e-learning and ICT research across the Faculty of Education, and I convene the  Plymouth eLearning Research Network which is drawn from academics and professionals across all faculties. I am the Chair of IFIP Working Group 3.6 (Distance Education) - a UNESCO sponsored international group of researchers and academics and I am co-editor of the journal Interactive Learning Environments. I also serve on the editorial boards of a number of other significant learning technology journals including ALT-J, the Quarterly Review of Distance Education and the Canadian online journal IRRODL. In 2008, during the EDEN Lisbon conference, I was awarded a Life Fellowship in recognition of my contribution to research in European distance education.

My research has led to a number of publications, including 35 peer reviewed journal articles, 20 book chapters, more than 100 conference presentations, and over 30 keynote/invited papers. These are listed below with appropriate hyperlinks to full articles or abstracts. You can also read my e-learning blog and post your comments.

    Personal Information

    Family

I have been married to Dawn since October 1986. She is a qualified nurse but is now engaged in a new career in teaching. Dawn completed her BA (Hons) degree at the College of St Mark and St John in 2003 with first class honours, majoring in English Language with ICT as her minor subject. In 2004 she qualified as a Secondary school teacher at the University of Plymouth (PGCE Secondary Programme) and worked for 2 years teaching English Language and Media Studies at South Dartmoor Community College in Ashburton, Devon.  She also worked in my department (Post Compulsory Education and Training) at the Faculty of Education, teaching literacy and ICT between 2006-2008 which resulted in a number of joint publications with me in e-learning research. Dawn has collaborated with me on a number of Web 2.0 based research projects during this period. She has recently taken up a new post as Teacher of English at Saltash.net Community School in Cornwall.

Dawn on her Graduation Day with Amy, Katie and Sam (December 2003)

  • Our eldest daughter, Amy was born in June 1990 and wants to work in the performing arts when she leaves school. Amy has now cpmplted her 6th form studies at Heles School in Plymouth. She is now heavily involved with KIDZ KLUB - a Christian youth organisation run by our local church fellowship. She hopes to continue her drama studies when she leaves school. She performed her first play at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth in 2007 with the TR2 youth company.
  • Katie was born early on 5 November 1992 whilst I was away speaking at a conference. We thought about calling her Katherine, but with her birthday on Bonfire night, Katherine Wheel(er) would not have been a very good saddle (!) Fortunately the conference was in England so I was able to travel back quickly that same evening. Katie is involved in the running of Y-POD, a youth group for 11-13 year olds. She is also at Heles School, plays flute and piccolo, and dances (but not all at the same time).
  • Our youngest child Samuel was born in June 1995 and attended Woodford Junior School during his primary schooling and is now at Heles. Sam is a Doctor Who fanatic, and collects anything related to the popular and recently revived BBC TV science fiction series. He is also into video games such as Pokemon, and surgical intervention will soon be required to separate him from his Gameboy and Nintendo DS Lite.

    Home

We have lived in Crabtree, on the edge of Plymouth since1997. It's a nice quiet area, just off the main A38 flyover, and is convenient for travel. We have shared our home with hamsters, mice and guinea pigs as well as the many visits from a dozen neighbourhood cats and the occasional hedgehog (!).

    Personal Interests

Since January 2004 we regularly attend Plymouth Christian Centre in Plymouth, where we meet with many other Christians from all walks of life. We enjoy the fellowship's relaxed and informal style, and the kids love the youth activities. I play electric lead guitar in the fellowship band each Sunday and occasionally lead the worship services. For the afficionados, my best guitar is a 1980 Nashville Gibson Les Paul Deluxe solid body. I use Roland Cube Amplification and Boss effects pedals. A few years ago I also acquired a 2003 Korean Fender Stratocaster and a thin body Aria Sandpiper semi-accoustic.

I have supported Manchester United since 1970, which should raise a few hackles in UK and elsewhere as they are by far the biggest and most successful soccer club in the world, and all the supporters of the 'other' teams get very jealous! I also try to get along to watch our local team Plymouth Argyle whenever I can - Argyle did well in 2002 and 2004 as league champions on both occasions! Come on you Greens!
