FacilitiesPlymouth is a large, modern well-equipped University and the facilities available to Marine Studies students reflect this.
There’s quite a big building programme in hand with a major library extension and a new fitness complex. The SEOES office is located in a brand new £23m building which also includes state-of-the-art lecture theatres and seminar rooms. The student population in Plymouth continues to grow and so there are also lots of new purpose-built accommodation facilities - which guarantee you an affordable and pleasant start to your life as a student.
All students have access to up-to-date IT facilities and use of email and the ‘student portal’ is central to our teaching programmes. You will normally prepare your coursework on a computer and there is high-speed internet access, lots of printers and scanners etc to support you in this.
If you’re coming on a Marine Studies course, it’s quite likely that water-based recreation is already part of your life and you could not choose a better location than Plymouth to develop your experience further. The city is a major centre for all forms of watersport including sailing, diving, powerboating, fishing and even gig-racing! Surfing is also a big attraction in the south west; there are many fine beaches in Devon and just over the river in Cornwall. The Students' Union supports all these water-based activities, as well as a full range of other sports and pastimes.
One of the specialist facilities used by all students on Marine Studies courses is the Ship Simulator. This is a computer system which is capable of putting you in charge of ship and testing your knowledge of navigation, collision-avoidance and communications. We can simulate up to 8 ships at once and you could find yourself in charge of anything from a fast patrol boat to a huge supertanker.
SEOES has it’s own research vessel – “Catfish”. This is a 42’ catamaran with twin diesel engines which acts as a floating laboratory for a wide range of courses. Whichever Marine Studies course you take, you will have the opportunity to consolidate your skills by planning and executing a passage on ‘Catfish’. Celestial navigation on Catfish VIDEO
