Information for parents

Plymouth is a very large University and it is natural to be concerned about the challenge that lies ahead for a young person taking the big step of starting out on a degree course.

These are some of the factors that make Plymouth a great choice:

  • Plymouth is a growing, successful University. The Sunday Times describes us as a “happening” place with lots of investment in new facilities for students.

  • Plymouth is a relatively safe place to live, but as a large provincial city it obviously has its share of urban crime and “dodgy” neighbourhoods. However, these areas are easy to spot and the University campus offers a safe and secure environment.

  • The City of Plymouth has an enviable combination of historic maritime tradition and the latest of modern facilities. There are strong and growing links between the City and the University.

  • The cost of living in the South West is relatively modest making Plymouth one of the more economical places to live as a student.

  • Because we are a big University, we have enormous strength in depth. We have the infrastructure to provide excellent support for our students. A whole range of services is in place to help with any problems, whether it’s health, finance or something directly related to studying.

  • We have lots of modern, affordable accommodation within a few minutes walk of the main University campus.

  • The staff at the University are very experienced. We understand the needs of students. We are determined that they will not only get excellent teaching - but also have a great time.

  • Our Marine Studies courses provide a great start for a career in the Marine Industry.
