Marine Studies Programmes

These are the core aims of the Marine Studies Programmes:

  • Develop the academic knowledge and skills required to study the complex interaction of the marine environment, the human element and technology.

  • Encourage you to be an independent and adaptable learner.

  • Provide you with a range of problem-solving skills.

Each of the degree programmes also provide career-specific skills to enable you to enter the relevant industry sector:

Merchant Shipping: the international shipping industry as a qualified Merchant Navy deck officer

Navigation: the offshore seismic survey industry

Ocean Yachting: the professional yachting industry in a sea-going or shore-based role

All the degree programmes provide you with the skills necessary to work in the management of shore-based marine industries in the relevant sector.

All Marine Studies students follow a common first year. The courses then continue in parallel with a common core, but with specialist modules which determine the final degree awarded.

This provides you with the flexibility to make a more informed choice about which degree to pursue after completing the first year.
