Marine Studies Teaching

All Marine Studies students follow a common first year. The courses then continue in parallel with a common core, but with specialist modules which determine the final degree awarded.

This provides you with the flexibility to make a more informed choice about which degree to pursue after completing the first year.

The Marine Studies core subjects in each year are:

     Year 1      Year 2     Year 3

  • Oceanography and Meteorology Foundation
  • Planet Earth
  • Navigation and Leadership Fieldwork
  • Navigation Techniques
  • Safety at Sea
  • Study Skills
  • Coastal Navigation
  • Marine Decision Support Systems
  • Marine Positioning Science
  • Research Methods

  • Problem-solving in the Marine Environment
  • Marine Management and Law
  • Ocean Navigation
  • Honours Project

Each of the individual degree programmes contain specialist modules in years 2 and 3 which lead to the award of either Merchant Shipping, Ocean Yachting or Navigation degrees.
